Green-thumb locals encouraged to enter Sydney based garden competition

Posted on 01 October 2025

Horticulture enthusiasts across Sydney have an exciting opportunity to showcase their creativity, passion, and flair for garden design, with entries now open for the 2025 Sydney Spring Garden Competition.

Hosted by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, the competition aims to shine a spotlight on the elegance and creativity of residential front gardens and the beauty they bring to local communities.

All garden lovers throughout the Greater Sydney Metropolitan area are eligible to enter their homegrown havens, provided they are positioned in front of or around a private dwelling, and clearly visible from a public road or footpath.

Entries will close at midnight, Monday 6 October, with ten standout finalists selected to have their gardens assessed on location by an expert panel of judges. The winning entry will receive a $2,000 garden gift card to continue cultivating their passion.

“The Sydney Spring Garden Competition is more than a showcase of horticultural talent. It’s a celebration of imagination, resilience, and the joy that gardens bring to our communities”, said Murray Wilton, General Manager of Agriculture and Sydney Royal Easter Show.

“We know that creating a garden takes tremendous planning, patience and devotion, and it is our privilege to honour the dedication and passion that brings these spaces to life”.

Gardens will be assessed on a variety of aspects including landscaping & design, quality of functional & aesthetic aspects, and condition & general maintenance.

The competition is free to enter online and requires just three photo submissions of the eligible garden. Finalist judging will take place on the 20th and 21st of October, with judges assessing the gardens from a public road or footpath, to reflect how they are viewed by the wider community.

The winner will be announced on Monday, 27 October, with four lucky runners-up also receiving a $100 garden gift card.

This competition honours the legacy and bequest of the late Lt. Col. Charles Ronald Christian who wanted to recognise and reward those who bring joy to the community through a beautiful garden that can be admired by all. The RAS took on the trust left by Lt. Col. Christian in 2019 and re-launched the competition following a 40-year hiatus.
