The search for Australia’s best beer, cider, perry, and, for the first time, best alcoholic ginger beer, begins in Sydney

Posted on 01 SEPTEMBER 2026

Over 220 beers, ciders, perries and ginger beers from across Australia will be assessed by some of the country’s top experts over the next two days as the Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Show gets underway in Sydney.

Each exhibit will undergo blind judging, with industry experts assessing each exhibit based on its appearance, aroma, flavour, technical merit and style. Exhibits will then receive a score and be awarded a bronze, silver, or gold medal accordingly, with fifteen champion medals up for grabs.

This includes the introduction of the first Champion Ginger Beer title, as the competition welcomes a new standalone ginger beer class for the first time, thanks to the consistent growth of the beverage.

A Sydney Royal medal signifies to consumers that a product is of exceptional quality, while judging allows exhibitors to have their products benchmarked and receive expert feedback.

Champion prizes up for grabs include Champion Lager, Champion Pale Ale, Champion Indian Pale Ale, Champion Amber or Dark Ale, Champion Wheat or Other Grain, Champion Fruit or Sour, Champion Porter or Stout, Champion Experimental or Specialty, Champion Cider, Champion Perry, Champion Ginger Beer, Champion Reduced or No Alcohol Beer or Cider, the Chair of Judges Annual Prize, Best NSW Beer or Cider, and Best Beer or Cider of Show.

The Sydney Royal Beer & Cider Show results will be announced on Tuesday, 16 September, alongside the Sydney Royal Distilled Spirits Show results.

The Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Show is run by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, which runs the iconic Sydney Royal Easter Show and the Sydney Royal Wine, Beer and Cider, Distilled Spirits, Dairy, and Fine Food competitions.
