Awarded For: Reserve Grand Champion Bird of Show.
Donated By: Donated by the Birchall Family in memory of the late Pat Birchall, first presented in 2019. Pat first took part in the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1947 and has won over 2000 awards, including more than 500 major and champion awards. Among these awards were Grand Champion Bird of Show (1996) and Reserve Grand Champion Bird of Show (1997, 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2008). Pat judged poultry at 36 Sydney Royal Shows and spent most of his annual holidays for 30 years working at the farmyard nurseries. Pat’s lifelong interest in poultry started before he began school, when his parents gifted him some buff Pekins. He began exhibiting and breeding poultry in 1939 at the age of eight. This hobby expanded with help from his wife, Dorothy, following their marriage in 1956. From this date their birds were exhibited under the renowned P & D Birchall name. Pat was regarded as one of Australia’s most respected authorities on poultry; through his experience as a judge, exhibitor, and breeder of numerous poultry breeds, in particular the Australian Langshan. Pat has bred Australian Langshans longer than any other person in Australian history, and most Australian Langshans today carry the Birchall bloodline.
