Ceramic on a wooden base. A gold plate has been incorporated into the design to allow for engraving of winners' names. Not only are the ceramic manufacturing processes a mix of both Australian and Japanese technology and tradition, the design incorporates the peaked snow-covered mountains of Japan and the colours of the Australian desert. The maker, Paul Davis, was head of Sturt Pottery in Mittagong. He spent several years working in Japan. In 1997 he was awarded the professional name Yuho by the Saka Hereditary Studio of Hagi-Yaki Pottery. He was accepted into the 12th generation of the hereditary ceramic tradition studio established in 1402. His specialty is stoneware pots which contain Japanese and Australian ceramic trends in a unique and commanding way.
Awarded For: Awarded for Champion Open Heavyweight Steer.
Donated By: Donated by Kubota Australia and the Consulate General of Japan, Sydney. First presented in 2007. For many years, Japan has represented Australia's largest market for the export of heavyweight steers; the creation of this trophy acknowledges the significance of the trade relationship shared by these two countries and promotes the ongoing friendship between them. The Australia-Japan Friendship Trophy began as an annual trophy in 2006. It was well-received and thus decided that a Perennial Trophy was appropriate. It was decided to commission ceramic artist Paul Davis to create a unique piece. In cooperation with the Consulate-General of Japan, the trophy was supported by Kubota Australia until 2017.
