Edwardian sterling silver twin handled cup. Made by James Jackson & Son, in Sheffield in 1903.
Awarded For: Awarded for Australian National Champion Pony Hack, over 12.2 hands and not exceeding 14 hands.
Donated By: Donated by Mr Grant R Poolman and first presented in 1980. The Poolman family has been associated with the RES for five generations. AR Poolman belonged to the third generation of the family and played the most significant role, particularly in relation to pony classes at the Show. Samuel Poolman (grandfather of AR Poolman) judged the machinery section at the first Sydney Exhibition (forerunner of the RES). Percy Poolman (father of AR Poolman) regularly exhibited at the RES, particularly the harness section, once winning Champion Harness Horse. Arthur Renwick Poolman (known as Bill) was born in 1910 and died in 1987. He was a member of the Committee for the Australian Pony Stud Book in its formative stages. With his sister, Linda, he operated one of the earliest Australian Pony Studs, the Renalyn Pony Stud, which bred and showed ponies with success for many years. In the late 1940's Mr AR Poolman turned his attention to judging and was Steward with the RAS Horse section for many years. He showed a great diversity of knowledge of horses by judging horses of all sizes, ridden, led and driven at the RES. One of his favourite stories was to tell of the occasion the Judge for the Baker's Cart did not turn up, Mr Poolman immediately volunteered to judge that class as by this time, he had judged every other horse class held in the Main Arena. Mr Poolman's son, Mr Grant Poolman, who has been an honorary Veterinary Surgeon for the RAS for twenty years (1973-1992), donated the trophy. His wife and children have exhibited at the RES.
