Flower & Garden

The “Horticulture Competition”, now known as the Sydney Royal Flower & Garden Show, began with displays for judging in 1869-1888. Fruits, vegetables, plants and, at times, silkworms (1869), coffee & tea (1871) and salad (1875) have all been included.

Early settlers took great pride in their gardens and saw them as an opportunity to retain a link with home. Prior to taking leadership roles with the Agricultural Society, both William Macarthur and Thomas Mort were recognised in horticulture competitions for their fuchsias.

The competition keeps evolving, reflecting industry and community trends. The Sydney Royal Easter Show’s annual showcase for the horticultural industry is visited by tens of thousands of people every year.
