Record-baking at 2017 Sydney Royal Easter Show

It has been a “scone-a-thon” for The Country Women’s Association Tea Room which is on target to smash the Sydney Royal Easter Show scone sale record with more than 50,000 scones expected to be sold.

Rising by more than 4,000 scones sold daily, the Tea Room soared past the 2015 record of 49,512 after cutting it close in 2016 selling 49,100.

Chairman of the NSW State Show Committee, Carol Vincent, said the CWA Tea Room has been a recipe for success in its 70th year the at the Show, with Showgoers literally running to be first in line each morning.

“It doesn’t matter what sort of scone you make whether it’s with cream, butter or lemonade, the less you handle the dough the better,” Ms Vincent said.

“A tip when baking scones at home is to put your cookware in the freezer so your mixing knife and stainless steel or crockery bowl are cold when you start.”

The scones are made with 2.5 tonnes of donated Manildra flour, served alongside more than 18,000 sugar sachets and 20,000 tea bags.

Run by 450 volunteers from across NSW, country members from as far as Hillston, Warren and Cowra mix with CWA city forces to lend a much “kneaded” helping hand.

“This is the CWA’s main fundraiser which means we can continue to support communities and help each other,” Ms Vincent said.

Funds raised through the Tea Room go back into the running of the CWA, an association which aims to improve conditions for rural families through scholarships and programs including their Disaster Relief Fund.

General Manager Agriculture and Sydney Royal Easter Show, Murray Wilton, said attendance has been strong for the 14-day Show which runs until Wednesday, 19 April.

“Like the farmers in rural communities we support, the Show is dependent on weather and these sunny days have helped us see more Showgoers than expected come through our gates daily,” Mr Wilton said.

“We value tradition and the CWA Tea Room is an absolute Show classic, they support our mission to nurture and forge the future of agriculture.”

Keeping their winning streak going, the CWA Tea Room was also presented with a Commercial Exhibitor Award Gold Award - Catering Outlet Above 7m on the 13th of April.
