Woolworths supports NSW country Show Societies through generous donation
Posted on : 16 December 2020
Show Societies across New South Wales will reap the benefits of a generous donation by Woolworths following the cancellation of the 2020 Royal Agricultural Society of NSW’s (RAS) Big Bush BBQ, held annually at the iconic Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Thirty Show Societies were set to participate in this year's Big Bush BBQ to raise funds for their local agricultural show and the wider community, many of whom were affected by this year’s devastating bushfires, floods and the on-going drought.
Thanks to Woolworths, each society will receive over $1,200 despite their event's cancellation, with a total of almost $40,000 donated by the Supermarket to assist regional shows and rural communities following a challenging year.
A long term supporter, Woolworths has been involved in the program since its inception in 2018, kindly donating the produce that makes the BBQ’s possible each year. Woolworths has also been a partner of the Sydney Royal Easter Show for over 25 years.
Woolworths General Manager Group External Communications and Community Peter O’Sullivan said the donation is recognition of the tough year the Show Societies have had.
"We're proud of our long term support of the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the fundraising of the Show Societies. We look forward to working with these groups again when the Show resumes in 2021."
Sydney Royal Easter Show General Manager Murray Wilton says the donation will go a long way in regional communities.
"The Big Bush BBQ is a fantastic initiative which sees our country shows raise significant funds to support their communities and help fund their local events" Mr Wilton said.
"Thanks to the generosity of Woolworths Australia, these country shows will not go without this year and will be able to utilise the donations for their local communities and investing the money back into getting agricultural shows back up and running in 2021."
The Woolworths donation will be distributed through the RAS of NSW Foundation (RASF). As the charitable arm of the RAS, the RASF aims to build strong and vibrant regional and rural communities through educational and community grants and projects.
