North East Victoria's Maisie Adams wins prestigious 2020 JB Fairfax Award

Posted on : 16 December 2019

The future of rural journalism is in good hands with North East Victorian student, Maisie Adams announced as the 2020 Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Foundation (RASF) JB Fairfax Rural and Regional Journalism Scholarship recipient.

An award that recognises the power of community and storytelling, the scholarship rewards those who are striving to be a voice for regional and rural Australia.

Growing up on a beef farm in Staghorn Flat, near Albury/Wodonga, Maisie has a deep understanding of the issues affecting regional areas and through her writing she wishes to be an advocate for the industry and communities she respects so much.

Maisie says journalism is her real focus in life and she can't wait to share the incredible stories from the bush with a wider audience.

"For me, rural journalism combines two of my favourite passions - writing and farming. I am very excited to bring light to rural and regional issues," said Miss Adams.

"Living away from home has given me a new perspective, I see all the work my sister is doing as a researcher for Farmers Health and the on-going dedication of my father, even during tough times. To me, this work and devotion to the community is so meaningful and is a true reflection of the Australian spirit."

RASF Manager Cecilia Logan, says Maisie is an inspiring young journalist.

"Maisie embodies everything the RASF JB Fairfax award stands for; she is motivated by the issues affecting regional areas and wishes to become a voice for country Australia - sharing the stories that matter," Mrs Logan said.

As 2020 JB Fairfax winner, Maisie will receive invaluable practical work experience with the Sydney Royal Easter Show media team, Fairfax's Agricultural newspaper, The Land and ABC's Landline in Brisbane.

Maisie will also take home a prize of $10,000 to put towards her studies and help launch her journalism career.
