Rats & Mice Competition History

Assets reference: Rat & Mouse Section history
Date: 2004
Collection: Competition histories

The earliest record of the exhibition of rats or mice at the Show was in 1882 when ‘White Rats’ were entered in a miscellaneous class by a person named R. W. Loughnan. The animals were not shown again until 2003 when a non-competitive exhibition was mounted. Following its success, the Rat & Mouse Show became an official Sydney Royal competition in 2004.

The aim of the competition is to promote public understanding of rats and mice as pets, and greater acceptance of them in the community.

The Rat & Mouse Show is currently self-administered by the Rodent Fanciers’ Association of NSW Inc., and run under the umbrella of the RAS Domestic Animals Section.
