Victorian company Cobram Estate has risen above some of the most respected names in Australian fine food and beverages to be awarded the 2016 Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) President’s Medal.

The President’s Medal recognises the recipient as the nation’s “best of the best” across the food and beverage sectors judged through the Sydney Royal competitions.

The President’s Medal winner was announced to a sold out gathering at Sydney Showground on night six of the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Cobram Estate has, since its inception in 1998, established itself as a leader in the modern extra virgin olive industry and has quickly built a global following for its quality and industry practices.

The vision of horticulturalists Rob McGavin and Paul Riordan, Cobram Estate, emanating out of the business’ Boundary Bend Estate property at Lara in north-east Victoria, produces and markets supreme quality extra virgin olive oils for Australian and international consumption.

Cobram Estate’s road to the 2016 President’s Medal followed three wins in the 2016 Sydney Royal Olive Oil awards.

Cobram Estate won for Best Olive Oil, Champion Varietal Extra Virgin Olive Oil and ultimately “Best In Show” Olive Oil or Olive Product for their 2016 Ultra Premium Hojiblanca.

Accepting the award, co-founder of Cobram Estate Rob McGavin expressed his gratitude;

“We are really humbled and honoured to win this prestigious award,” he said.

“What we are especially proud of is that the quality of what we are able to produce at Cobram Estate is readily available to everyone in Australia at an affordable price,” Mr McGavin said.

The gathering heard that Cobram Estate has grown to produce the equivalent of 25% of the extra virgin olive oil output of powerhouse Italy.

Six finalists were examined extensively for the President’s Medal honour;

  • Cobram Estate (olive oil)

  • Tathra Oysters (oysters)

  • House of Arras (sparkling wine)

  • Bracegirdle’s House of Fine Chocolate

  • Breakout River Pty Ltd (lamb)

  • Redoak Brewery (beer)

A President’s Medal winner must not only show a market leading product and quality, but an operation which strictly observes environmental sustainability in its production practices.

The Cobram Estate operation at Lara, Victoria was visited firsthand by President’s Medal judges during the assessment process.

Robert Ryan OAM, President of the RAS congratulated Cobram Estate on its fantastic win against a class field of finalists.

“The President’s Medal is the RAS’ ultimate tip of the hat to innovative Australian producers who create world class products, Mr Ryan said.

“Cobram Estate in its 20 years in existence has not only identified and established a great property at Lara, but done so with a strict adherence to environmental standards and sensitivities”.

Almost five thousand products were entered across the Sydney Royal competitions in 2016, beginning the journey as potential President’s medal winners.

“We got down to six worthy finalists and I congratulate Cobram Estate on walking away with the President’s Medal,” Mr Ryan said.

The President’s Medal is proudly supported by NSW Department of Primary Industries and Wine Selectors.
