JB Fairfax Award supporting the future of rural journalism

Posted on : 03 July 2019

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) is calling on the next generation of journalists to throw their hat in the ring and become a voice for rural and regional Australia.

Now open - the JB Fairfax Award for Rural & Regional Journalism scholarship, launched by John B Fairfax eleven years ago, aims to encourage quality coverage of rural and regional affairs by supporting Australia’s up and coming journalists.

2019 JB Fairfax Award recipient, Jarrod Sansom, says the scholarship provided a unique insight into the industry;

 “I applied for this award because it had the potential to not only advance my career prospects, but also allow me to contribute to regional and even remote communities.

“Traditional journalism is an increasingly difficult industry to break into. Performing at university is not enough, it is also about timing and seizing an opportunity when it comes.

“This scholarship has been my chance to show that I can make a name for myself in this industry,” Mr Sansom said.

Alongside a $10,000 cash prize for career development, the 2020 JB Fairfax recipient will receive three internships - with print, television and the fast-paced Media Centre of the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Tell the stories for those who can’t and stand out in the media industry by applying now.

Applications close 11 August, 2019 with the successful recipient announced early 2020.

Ends.

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit www.rasnsw.com.au/foundation to find out more about the scholarship, the editorial requirements and to complete the online application form.

The JB Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism operates through a generous annual donation by Mr John B Fairfax AO and is managed by the RAS Foundation.
