Royal Easter Show honours District Exhibits legend Tom Dwyer

12 Apr 2017

Wednesday, 12 April 2017 The Sydney Royal Easter Show has today honoured an outstanding contribution to the event spanning more than 35 years with the announcement of Forbes local Thomas Dwyer as the 2017 Show Legend. Mr Dwyer has provided produce for the Show’s Western District Exhibit since 1964 and has helped design the intricate displays for the past 14 years. He has also served as a steward at the RAS Grains State Judging Competition. The annual Show Legend award has recognised outstanding service and commitment to the Show since 2001. It serves as an opportunity for the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) to publicly thank a member of the Show Family who has worked tirelessly towards the betterment of the Show and aims to continue the tradition by helping the Legend pass on their knowledge to the next generation of Show Family members. RAS President, Robert Ryan, said Mr Dwyer epitomised the spirit of the Show. “If Tom can help with something he will, he is a huge supporter of the Show and is not only our Show Legend but also a legend within his home community and the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW (ASC),” Mr Ryan said. “He is always happy to lend a hand, whether that be by supplying extra fruit and vegetables to various parts of the Show or advice on competitions. He is the Court Organiser for Western Districts and always greets everyone with a smile and story.” A typically humble Mr Dwyer said it is a shared award; “All of these people are part of this award too. You never get an award by yourself, it is the people that support you that give you these awards”, he said. “Of course I want to thank my wife, she is not able to be here today because she is in hospital”, Mr Dwyer said. Mr Dwyer’s Royal Easter Show achievements include: Steward at the Sydney Royal Grain judging competition for the past 10 years Provided grain samples for the Grain judging competition for the past 10 years Provided a wool mural feature for the Food Farm at the 2013 Show Provided all the grains and sheafs of different grasses and grains to decorate the Grain Shed Education Centre at the Sydney Royal Awarded a 35 years RAS Service Award in 2012 Volunteer of the Western Districts Exhibit for four weeks at the Sydney Royal Easter Show every year Grown, collected and prepared grain samples for the past 34 years Grown, collected and prepared clovers and grasses for the last 10 years Grains co-ordinator for the last 14 years for Western District Exhibit Guest speaker at several Rotary city and country meetings speaking about the District Exhibits. WARNING ABOUT ACTIVITY OF FRAUDULENT TICKET AND COUPON SELLERS TARGETING THE SYDNEY ROYAL EASTER SHOW

10 Apr 2017

10 April 2017 The Royal Agricultural Society, operator of the Sydney Royal Easter Show andPolice are urging people to be wary of purchasing tickets, coupons and vouchers for Sydney's Royal Easter Show through unofficial sellers following reports of credit card fraud. Police are investigating the use of fraudulent credit cards to purchase bulk tickets, coupons and vouchers for the annual event which are then on-sold to unsuspecting buyers through online market places. On Friday (7 April 2017) police arrested two men at the show after a suspected stolen credit card was allegedly used to purchase more than $800 worth of coupons and vouchers. Tickets, coupons and vouchers which are purchased fraudulently could be voided at the event, irrespective of whether those using them are aware they are fraudulent. Police are continuing to work closely with event organisers and official ticket sellers as investigations continue. "This sends a strong message that if you attempt to engage in fraud at or around the Sydney Royal Easter you are a very high likelihood of being caught," said Chief Operating Officer of the Sydney Showground Darryl Jeffrey. "The RAS, Sydney Showground, Police, Credit Card companies and ticket agency Ticketmaster are working together and these arrests and charges early in the show prove our systems are working", Mr Jeffrey said. "Significant fraud has also been picked up through advanced electronic detection systems. Fraudulent transaction will be identified at entry to the Sydney Royal Easter Show and you will be denied access. "It is important you only purchase tickets and associated products through official channels", he said.   Guests to the Show should also be warned about ticket scalpers, as tickets purchased fraudulently, on-sold online and then scalped at or near the Sydney Showground may also be cancelled at the entry points.
