Comboyne's Hannah Southcott wins JB Fairfax Award for Journalism

28 Mar 2016

Hannah Southcott from Comboyne on the NSW Mid North Coast has won the 2016 Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) Foundation JB Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism. The prestigious award, now in its eighth year, is given to a journalism student who has a passion and desire to report on issues affecting rural and regional communities. Created through a private donation by Mr John B Fairfax AO, the award is managed by the RAS Foundation and includes a $10,000 scholarship as well as practical work experience at Fairfax Agricultural Media and the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Currently completing a Masters in Journalism at the University of Technology, Sydney, Hannah said she was honoured to receive the award. "Winning this scholarship is such an exciting step for me and my future career plans. It has given me a big boost of confidence in my writing skills and my potential to be one of Australia's future rural journalists." "I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to work in the Royal Easter Show media room, alongside a team of talented journalists who report on rural stories and give a voice to people living in rural and remote areas." "I am also looking forward to using the experience and contacts I gain from the internships to help me pursue a career in rural journalism once I graduate," said Hannah. RAS Foundation Executive Officer, Kate Ross said the scholarship aims to unearth an aspiring young writer who is dedicated to sharing the stories of rural and regional Australia. "Hannah is a terrific example of what this award is all about. She is passionate about telling rural stories and getting those stories out into places beyond just rural areas," Ms Ross said. The RAS Foundation is a charitable foundation which seeks to encourage educational opportunity and foster vibrant and sustainable rural and regional communities by supporting a range of targeted scholarships and community grants.
